REFLECTIONS ON WORK TO DATE AND PLAN FOR FINAL WEEKS [22/04/20]

Updated: Apr 29, 2020

Where am I at?...conceptually and practically...

What have I achieved?

What can I improve on?

Where am I taking the work in final stages?

How will I finalise my ideas visually/conceptually?

Will it be finished, or will work exhibited be work in progress?

What do I want my audience to question/gain from work?

Questions to consider when exhibiting digitally, and how this has carved a new pathway for work created for this project:

Just how often do we view photographs physically?

How may this alter and effect our perception and interpretation of them?

Does the surrounding space (conventional gallery space) change our experience?

Has the rise in digital technologies evolved / altered photography’s materiality?

Will exhibiting our final work in a digital manner disengage the audience?

Will our focus and attention be limited on each photograph?

How do we habitually and usually communicate/deal with digital images on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook – made for having a shorter attention span?

Will our engagement be limited for each photograph?

How does a screen act as a barrier?

Or is it a barrier?...space in between…

PHOTOGRAPHY'S MATERIALITY >? WHAT AM I EXPLORING?

In drawing attention to the emulsion's surface, materiality forces the photograph’srecognition as both indexical trace and photographic object, a duality that cannot be denied. ... Perhaps instead, the material turns in contemporary photography poses different questions about the nature of its own condition.

Can we discuss the materiality of a digital image in similar terms to a photographic print? Is it important to distinguish between the two within wider conceptual discussion? Or are we simply fetishizing the traditional due to a sense of sentimentality?
